How have you experienced generosity this week?      I think one of the biggest things that I have noticed this week in regards to generosity is the fact that every individual we have come in contact with this week and everyone that has given us a little bit of their knowledge has been beyond generous, Kayla, Kim, Victoria, every single nurse all of them have gone above and beyond to make this opportunity happen. Not only were all of the faculty of Cherokee and Mission hospital inpatient and outpatient they took the time to share our stories and become vulnerable with us being complete strangers says a lot about them and their culture and they are nothing short of amazing. What did you do while you were here to improve the health of others?      Because this was an observational experience it was hard to help others and educate them based off of what we could and could not do, however from this experience it is safe to say that I will be able to better care for my patients from h

Now that you have had 3 days in the Cherokee Health Care system, what are some of the most critical issue this culture encounters daily?             I think the main critical issues that are encountered here on a daily basis are things like the drug abuse that we have seen. I also feel, after being in the emergency department in Cherokee today I found that most of these patients choose not to go to the urgent care and tend to come to the ED instead, even though this is not a critical issue for the patients because no matter where they go their healthcare is paid for, however it is a little bit of an issue for the hospital and the emergency department. Are there any prevalent conditions that you have noted? If so are they related to genetics, culture or deficient knowledge/health maintenance?              Some of the more prevalent conditions that I have noticed here in Cherokee involve substance abuse, which is related to their culture and what happens here – the casino. How did the 130 beds, only children's hospital in Western North Carolina compare to your previous experiences in health care?         Missions Hospital was amazing, at first the 130 bed children's hospital was a bit overwhelming, Mission is something that I am more use to from back home so I was not in total shock, however compared to what we have been experiencing this week in Cherokee. It was so amazing to see everyone at work, everyone seemed to love the town that they live in and most of the nursing staff that we talked to today has been there for 20 plus years, which means something must be working, right? In regards to Mission Children outpatient I was in complete awe that facility is truly amazing and I was beyond impressed with their lower level department. I have been interested in adding SAN-P to my name after graduation and that facility touched my heart, and how inviting they make it for the children and their families is truly a blessing.  Consider how hospita

What have you learned about childrearing practices in this culture?       Because this is a matriarchal society the children are mostly raised by their mothers or grandmother. They are raised to respect elders and they view the woman as the valued figure, they are raised to respect their culture and value their traditions.  Which individuals have much respect and authority and why?       For the Cherokee I have found that the elder hold the most respect and authority. They are the ones who have passed on the knowledge and culture from generation to generation, and they are the reason that this culture continues on because once they are gone, unless you have spoken to an elder you wont understand the culture and where you came from.  What type of family structures or family type did you observe?     I can personally say that I have not yet gotten to observe families together however I have been able to be apart of some really good discussions about families.

Who runs the health care system in this community?        The health care system is ran by the community members, there is a council of Cherokee who make some of the main decisions that pertain to the hospital. For this particular hospital prior to its build the community members were asked what they felt that their needs were so in a way the community also had some decisions on how their health care system ran.  Who are the members of the health care team?       The health care team members consists of anyone, they have people of Cherokee as well as non-Cherokee. No discrimination, just as long as you are passionate about what you do. This includes physicians, RN, LPN, CNA, dietitian, a mental health counselor, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, everything that any other hospital has.  When someone comes in with a need how is it handled?       If someone came into the emergency department (ED) they would treat them no matter what nationality that they are they would get treated
