What are you most excited about in the days to come?
Thinking about this trip I can say that I am
most excited about the cultural experience that I will get to observe, I am
also looking forward to experience a different hospital because even though we
have had the hospital experience already, every hospital works differently and because
this is a Cherokee hospital I am expecting a few differences.
What are your apprehensions?
I don’t think that I have a
lot of apprehensions regarding this trip, if any it would be about
disrespecting the Natives, not intentionally, but by not fully understating
their culture.
Considering the social/cultural and environmental influences on
children, what have you explored in the countries and boundaries in which we
will be learning?
After a little bit of
research that has been done I think that it is safe to say that the children of
this area are losing the traditions that have been passed down generation to
generation, they are losing the language that was spoken for so many years. I
also feel that the children are at a much higher risk of substance abuse and
disease because of where they live.
What are your thoughts about Native American peoples?
When thinking about Native Americans I first
think of tradition, after reviewing this culture just the little bit that I
have I have found that this is something that they hold with the upmost value.
I think that this community also has a lot of respect for the elderly as well.
I also think about nature and the land when I think of Native American people,
they are well known for using what the earth has given them to heal.
Do you think you may have any cultural biases/prejudices/pride/stereotyping
that you may need to set aside to have a better understanding about
this culture?
I think that it is safe to
say that yes there is a little bit of pride/and stereotyping that needs to be
set aside, however we were asked to review a little bit about the culture as
well as the trail of tears and while reviewing this I think that there was a
lot of confusion for me. I understood what happened and that the Native
Americans were moved out of their land by "white people" and this to
me was wrong and embarrassing.
